Lenten Reflections...

Hosea 6:3 “Let us acknowledge the Lord; let us press on to acknowledge him.  As surely as the sun rises, he will appear; he will come to us like the winter rains, like the spring rains that water the earth.”

A wise farmer knows that winter and spring rains are necessary in order for their crops to grow.  They also know that crops cannot grow in constant rain.  The rain has to cease and allow the seeds to take root in order for growth to occur.

In life, we experience both rainy and dry seasons.  Rainy seasons, when God is close and speaking all of the time; and dry seasons, when He seems distant and quiet.  Scripture talks about these seasons...

James 5 says “Be patient, then, brothers and sisters, until the Lord’s coming.  See how the farmer waits for the land to yield its valuable crop, patiently waiting for the autumn and spring rains.  You too, be patient and stand firm, because the Lord’s coming is near.”

It’s easy to coast through those rainy seasons when God seems so near and present.  But what about the time between the rains?  Our faith has to make it through these times too; times when that “rainy season” word is tested.  We have to allow the truths He poured on us to take root and cause growth in our life.

A lot of times during this “dry season” we begin to question God’s presence in our lives.  We must hold firm to Hosea 6:3 in those times, trusting just as the scripture says, that as we press on to acknowledge him we can be certain that “As surely as the sun rises, he will appear; he will come to us like the winter rains, like the spring rains that water the earth.”

Where do you find yourself today?  If you are in a dry season, will you press into him and trust that He is present and more importantly allow His truths to fill your heart?  If you are experiencing a “rainy season” currently may you allow His words to take root and produce a crop for the “dry” days to come.

Jesus, thank you for the rainy seasons in our lives where we sense your presence and loving guidance.  We pray that we would allow you to do your work during the “time between the rains.”  That we would press into you and trust that just as the sun rises you will appear.

Week 11:52 {Patterns}...

William has been fascinated with the "Polar Express" for a couple of years.  He has been begging for "the mountain to the north pole" for his trains.  We could never seem to figure out a way to build it with his train track and bridge supports.

Micaiah decided to take on the task of building the mountain with Legos.  He loves attention from his little brother and this was a sure way to secure some.

It hasn't been an easy process...he's experienced much frustration as he has built the mountain only to have it fall under the weight of the trains.  But one of his greatest character traits is his perseverance (he gets it from his Daddy).  He doesn't give up.  He gets frustrated and may need to be reminded to take a break but, he continues.

In fact at one point I said to him..."Micaiah, if it's too difficult I'll just tell Will that we can't do it."  He didn't accept my statement but went back to brainstorming with Wes.  Then he began building again from the ground up.

Swinging...

This afternoon was the first time we hit close to 60 degrees after a long, cold winter.  I'm sure "winter" will visit again but we made the most of today.

While the boys were all playing in the yard and the sun was dipping low in the sky, I grabbed my camera and took pictures in between Will's requests for pushes "higher, higher!"  Eli was performing silly stunts (throwing various objects into other objects) and Will was laughing  hysterically.  I wish I would have snapped a few pictures of Eli but I didn't think about it at the time.

Let something happen in me

A Lenten Reflection..."Remedy"...

For the last year or so, I have been honored to be a part of a writing group.  If you follow my Multitude Monday posts, I have frequently referenced it as one of my gifts.  We were recently asked to write some lenten reflections to be used as a part of "40 Days | A Guide for Lent."

~Joshua at the Jumonville Cross Easter Weekend 2012

“Remedy” by The David Crowder Band

Here we are, here we are. The broken and used, mistreated, abused. Here we are. Here You are, here You are. The beautiful one, who came like a Son. Here You are.

So we lift up our voices. We open our hands. To cling to the love that we can’t comprehend. Oh, lift up your voices. And lift up your heads. To sing of the love that has freed us from sin.

He is the one who has saved us. He is the one who embraced us. He is the one who has come and is coming again. He’s the remedy.

Here we are, here we are. Bandaged and bruised awaiting a cure. Here we are. Here You are, here You are. Our beautiful King bringing relief. Here You are with us

So we lift up our voices and open our hands. Let go of the things that have kept us from Him.

Recently, one of our children has repeatedly asked us to listen to “Remedy.”   I’ve always loved the song but it’s taken on new meaning for me since his inquiries.  Most of the time as we’re listening to the song he will ask me “Mom, what is your favorite part of this song?”    One day I asked him the same question.  He replied,

“He is the one who has saved us. He is the one who embraced us.
He is the one who has come and is coming again. He’s the remedy.”

Then I asked him what that verse of the song meant for him.  He said, ”In heaven there will be no more _________.”  When he answered, he listed the one thing that has brought him the most shame, defeat, and failure.  His awareness of the brokenness of this world is one thing but his ability to recognize Jesus as the remedy is another.  So often I think I can fix that one thing in my own life.  I can’t.  He can.  He’s the remedy.

Jesus, here we are, bandaged and bruised, awaiting a cure.  We open our hands to the One that comes to heal our brokenness.  Quiet our souls, let us trust in Your provision and love.

Week 9:52 {Color Blind}...

This winter we have had a lot of snow.  I love the way the snow covers everything in a pure white blanket.  However, months of snow on the ground has made my eyes somewhat heightened to "notice" color when it's present.

Tonight, I went outside at sunset to take a picture of the skyline.  The "color" in the sky seemed to contrast the "lack of color" in the snow covering the ground.

Then about a half an hour later I noticed a "warm" hue to the light in the house.  When I see this in the late evening on the west side of the house I know what it means.  I grabbed the camera again to take another shot.  What an incredible difference a half an hour made in the color of this landscape.

The Eastloch Tree...

It's the only tree in our front yard.  Poised at the convergence of two roads.  There is a small sign nailed to the trunk marking our address although I've always thought it's too far away from the house to really help with navigation.  The boys wait for the bus under it's shade in spring and play football under it's changing leaves in the fall. It's unassuming compared to the original oaks in the backyard No swings hang from its branches beckoning kids to fly.  But something about it intrigues me.

It was the heavy fog, early one November morning, that initially drew me in.  The fog surrounding the tree with such beauty and mystery caused me to pause and capture the moment in photograph.  I was captivated...noticing that some leaves still clung to the branches.

Just a couple of weeks later during one of the first snowfalls of the winter, I paused to take another photograph of the tree as big snowflakes fell all around it.  It was this second photograph that prompted me to "name" the tree.  I named it so it would be easy to locate the pictures on my computer.

But with the naming came a realization...this tree represented something deeper for me.  It's taken a while to put into words and I still hesitate to try to explain the naming for fear that it sounds trite or cliche.

I've realized that the Eastloch tree is a constant in my life when so many other things are changing.

Many times this tree has caused me to pause and slow...to breathe in the beauty God is displaying right out my front door.

There are other times when I drive or walk right by without noticing, but I know that it's there.

It was early spring when we first moved in to this house.  We had the trees trimmed by a company that we've grown to trust over the years.  I remember saying to the Arbormaster owner,  "I'm worried the tree in the front yard may be dying.  I notice buds but no leaves. All the other trees in the yard are in full bloom."

After examining it, he said that he noticed a large "trunk wound" but the only way we would know if it was going to survive was to prune it and see what happened.

I'm beginning to realize that the Eastloch tree is a concrete example of Jesus in my life.  He is constant.  No matter what I am going through.

There are times when I sense His presence drawing me close and I stop and pay attention.  Then there are other times when I rush through life without stopping to take notice but He's still right there.

James 1:17 says "He does not change like shifting shadows."

Hebrews 13:8 reminds us "Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever."

Malachi 3:6 “I the Lord do not change."  Whether I sense His presence or not...He is there.

And even with a gaping wound, a little pruning may be just what we need to bring healing and to facilitate healthy growth.  But, most of the time it takes trust and perseverance that the difficult pruning will bring about something good and fruitful.

John 15:1-3 says...
“I am the true vine, and my Father is the gardener.  He cuts off every branch in me that bears no fruit, while every branch that does bear fruit he prunes so that it will be even more fruitful."

As I look through the pictures that I've taken over the past few months...there are stormy days, bright blue sky days, mysterious fog days...and yet the Eastloch tree remains the same.  I'm so thankful for this concrete reminder.

It's only been three months since I began this photographic journey with the Eastloch tree and I don't intend to stop.

I've witnessed beauty in the most barren season...and look forward to new growth this spring.
